Gabby is an 11 month Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. She, and her brother, Gunner, recently arrived to one of ARF's great foster homes. Neither of them have the classic Rhodesian "ridge" on their back, but they are both beautiful dogs! They are crate trained and housebroken when allowed regular trips outside. They are both very affectionate with humans and would love to be a lap warmer for you and give you hugs. It is obvious they have had positive interactions with humans and other dogs, and as with most adolescent puppies, they need to work on learning their manners and following basic commands. Gunner in particular is fond of standing at the sink or countertop with you as you work, but has not helped himself to anything! Both will stand to give you hugs or jump with excitement. Gabby has quickly learned what "off" means, and Gunner is still trying to decide if we mean it! Given their size, they may not be the best addition to a family with small children at this point, but in time they will learn proper manners and be a great addition to any home that is willing and able to commit to proper training. The style of training that works best with a Rhodesian is positive reinforcement and patience. Ruling with too firm of an approach will be ineffective and most likely result in them becoming withdrawn or timid. They are both working on learning to walk on a leash - this is obviously completely new to them! Gunner is more agreeable to this process than Gabby so far. Rhodesians are also known for requiring a good amount of exercise, so a tall fence with room to run would be a big plus! Given proper exercise Gunner and Gabby will also love to relax and just cuddle with you, particularly on the couch if you let them! They are both great dogs that will bond well with you and make a great forever friend!
