8 to 10-week old Caramel is just as smooth and sweet as the candy for which she's named. A ShihTzu/Bichon "designer dog," Caramel has beautiful, soft fur the color of caramel and a sweet, affectionate personality. It is hard to believe that less than one week ago, Caramel and her brother Jasper were living in the cramped, squalorous confines of a puppy mill. Since arriving at their ARF foster home, both Caramel and Jasper have learned: nice warm baths get all the dirt and smell off and make them feel relaxed; good, nutritious food is always available; water is always fresh, cool, and plentful; toys are fun and chewable; tasty treats come when they learn a basic command (and sometimes just because they are cute!); and, when they are done playing and it's time to sleep, they have nice soft beds in which to snuggle. But, most of all, they've learned that two-leggeds are good and kind and always ready to give lots of praise and plenty of cuddles and kisses.
Caramel has a natural puppy curiosity so you've got to keep an eye on where she's headed or check on where she's been, but she's not destructive. She will lie contentedly at your side on the sofa while she chews on a deer antler or a nylabone. Then, she's off and running with her brother and the smaller dogs in her foster home. The big dogs are a bit scary right now but, with time, she'll do fine with them as well. Cats are a curiosity to Caramel. She so desperately wants to play with them, but they aren't so sure they want to play with this little dynamo.
Since she came with an upper respiratory infection, Caramel is taking some medication right now but is doing very well. Her appetite is picking up, and her energy level is great. She comes when called and is starting to learn basic commands. Potty training is going slowly, but she's a smart girl and will catch on fast. She has the natural puppy desire to chew but is easily redirected from a "forbidden" object to an appropriate toy.
Caramel is up-to-date on her puppy shots, has received a bordatella (kennel cough) vaccine, been dewormed, and empirically treated for fleas and ticks. It should be noted, however, that her foster family didn't see any sign of fleas or ticks before treatment. She is too young for her rabies vaccine, so Caramel's adoptive family will need to make sure she gets that at the age-appropriate time. Caramel has been microchipped. When she went to ARF's veterinarian, it would found that she had already been spayed.
As part of Caramel's adoption contract, her new family must take her to one positive reinforcement obedience class. This helps the puppy and her new family bond with each other as well as helps the puppy learn her place in her "pack."
Caramel is micro-chipped, up to date on all vaccinations, and is spayed. Her new family will be required to enroll her in a basic obedience course of their choosing. Carame's adoption fee is $400.
